The Importance of Colour in the Workplace

Colour has been proven to impact mood, productivity and well-being. Many businesses are starting to use colour to not only define their company and its brand aesthetic but also bring new life to office spaces.

Over the years, working spaces have evolved significantly; improvements have been made to create a more relaxed and comfortable atmosphere creating colourful environments where they can work in a more productive and positive way.

Take a second, just one second, to look up from your screen and look around the environment you’re in. Take note of what colours you see around you. What colour is most dominant? What colour makes you feel relaxed, energised, and productive? Do any colours produce negative feelings in your mind? Working in overwhelmingly neutral, colour-deficient spaces can create low moods and decrease productivity and positivity, so why not think about using bright colours in conference and meeting rooms to inspire ideas and discussions between employees and lighter pastel shades throughout breakout social and working spaces to create a sense of calm, comfort and relaxation.

It’s not just the colour of the walls that can be changed in the workplace. Think about the furniture, accessories, and lighting. Include furniture that adds a splash of colour to your space, dot greenery around the office for a biophilic feel, and keep your lighting warm and natural to improve employee well-being.

Envision your workspace in your mind. What colour do you think resonates most with conference rooms, breakout zones or social spaces? The colours that surround us on a daily basis can influence us more than we realise; it can affect mood and performance, so deciding on colour schemes with employee health and well-being at the forefront of our minds is vital to creating a comfortable and productive workspace.

Different colours resonate with people in different ways. Some colours can make people feel anxious and irritated, while other colours can bring on feelings of joy and creativity. Why not give your employees a choice? What colours would they like to see in the office?
